Hamilton | 30 hours per week | Monday to Thursday
Hamilton Methodist Social Services (HMSS) is a well‑established not‑for‑profit organisation supporting people and whānau through community and disability programmes that build connection, confidence and practical life skills. Food plays a central role in this Kaupapa, and their Cookery Programme and Community Kitchen are at the heart of what they do.
We are seeking a Qualified Cook or Chef who enjoys both hands‑on kitchen work and supporting others to learn, to join our client’s team as a Cookery Tutor & Community Kitchen Cook.
About the role
This is a practical, people‑focused role where you will lead the preparation of nutritious community meals while also tutoring participants in cookery skills in a safe, structured and encouraging environment.
Key responsibilities include:
Planning and preparing nutritious meals for groups of 60+ people
Developing menus and ordering supplies within budget
Supervising and supporting volunteers in a busy kitchen environment
Teaching cookery skills as part of the Cookery Programme
Supporting people with disabilities to participate safely and confidently
Maintaining high standards of food safety, hygiene and kitchen organisation
Following and contributing to risk management processes to ensure participant safety
About you
You will bring strong kitchen skills along with a genuine interest in helping others grow their confidence and independence.
Ideally you will:
Hold a relevant Cookery qualification (Level 4 preferred)
Have experience with bulk or community meal preparation
Demonstrate excellent food safety and hygiene knowledge
Be calm, organised and reliable, even in busy environments
Communicate well and work positively with staff and volunteers
Enjoy tutoring or teaching others in a supportive way
Have an understanding of, or willingness to learn, best practice when supporting disabled or vulnerable people
Align with HMSS values of respect, inclusion and manaakitanga
